Artists Weekend

Nancy Bingham, one of the Northwest’s most beloved and successful studio artists, divides each year between her home on neighboring Lopez Island in the San Juan Islands and the small village of Santa Cruz La Laguna in Guatemala. She began her career over 40 years ago in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where she received a BFA from the University of Michigan. She has taught classes or workshops at Olympia Community College, Pratt Fine Arts Center in Seattle, the Resource Institute in Alaska and the Lopez Island schools as well as through Elderhostel and Villa Sumaya Retreat Center in Guatemala. She is a featured artist in Hands at Work, Portraits & Profiles of People Who Work with Their Hands (Heron Moon Press, 2009). Her pottery and ceramic sculpture, reflecting her love of Pacific Northwest wildlife and mythology, can be found in collections locally and around the world.

Nancy loves to teach. Her workshops include painting and drawing, figure drawing, traditional pottery and primitive beach-firing, mask making, and her very popular “Art for the Artistically Afraid.” Her supportive and engaging manner allows students of all levels of experience to realize their own creativity and open new dimensions in their lives.

Program

Arrive in the islands Friday afternoon where we will whisk you off to Canoe Island by boat for a leisurely afternoon of kayaking and sailing, a game of tennis, or swimming in our heated pool. After a festive dinner on Friday evening, enjoy a digestive walk around the island with CIFC Executive Director Joseph Jones, who will share his knowledge of island ecology and marine biology.  You may see many of the local wildlife, river otters, harbor seals, black-tailed deer, bald eagles, and great blue herons, throughout the weekend.

Art classes will begin Saturday morning and run through Sunday afternoon.

We will provide:

All art supplies.

Meals from Friday evening through Sunday lunch, hors d’oeuvres, and wine.

Transportation between Canoe Island and Orcas Island (or if you live in the islands from your home island)

Use of all facilities and recreation equipment, including swimming pool, tennis racquets, and court, sailboats, kayaks, etc.

Housing in tipis with beds, linens and towels.

Transportation

By Air

The quickest way to arrive in the San Juan Islands is via Kenmore Air float plane to Lopez Island.  Kenmore Air has a free shuttle from SeaTac Airport to their take-off point on Lake Union.  The trip north takes just an hour.  We would pick you up from the 2 pm flight on Friday and return you to Lopez Island to meet your favored flight on Sunday.  Kenmore flights for June are $149 each way.

By Ferry

Walk on an afternoon ferry from Anacortes to Orcas Island after parking your car at the ferry landing in Anacortes for about $5 per day. Ferry tickets are about $15 round trip. We discourage driving on the ferry as you need to have your car in line up to 2 hours before the ferry leaves – both coming and going.

By Shuttle

For about $35 BellAir shuttle will bring you from SeaTac Airport or downtown Seattle to Anacortes, WA , where the ferry leaves for the islands.   The shuttle leaves the airport about every hour and arrives in Anacortes 2 hours and 45 minutes later. It leaves downtown Seattle mid-day.

By Victoria Clipper

The Clipper sails from Seattle to Friday Harbor in the San Juan Islands each day, departing Seattle at 7:45 pm and arriving in Friday Harbor at 11:15.  It leaves Friday Harbor at 4:30 pm and arrives back in Seattle at 7:30 pm. ($47.50 one way or $80 round trip).

All routes are beautiful: the flight over Puget Sound passes between the Olympic Mountains and the North Cascades, the trip up I-5 by bus or car passes through valley farm country and the Clipper and the ferry travel among the forested islands.

Tution

$325 includes gourmet meals from Friday evening through Sunday lunch, transportation to and from ferry-served islands, use of all facilities and recreation equipment (heated swimming pool, tennis racquets and court, sailboats, kayaks, etc.), housing in tipis with beds, linens and towels provided.
